Handling data with confidence is a skill increasingly expected of journalists and PA is no exception. You will spend time with our data specialists learning how best to write about data and gaining experience in handling stories involving statistics and spreadsheets.

You will also be able to attend face-to-face briefings (pandemic pending!), write stories for the wires on business and finance, and learn about the mechanisms of how and when companies report their results.

The Features team creates content across the worlds of Health and Wellbeing, Fashion and Beauty, Food and Drink, Interiors and Gardening, Books and Travel – and responds to the news of the day with a lifestyle lens, via fast turnaround online pieces. You will learn the art of interviewing experts and celebrities sensitively and in-depth, build relationships with PRs, craft reviews and develop longer-form pieces.

You will work alongside PA’s news editors as they manage our network of reporters across the UK and Ireland, planning coverage, answering calls from PRs, responding to customer requests and ensuring high-quality copy across our wire and digital services.

What you’ll need …

No previous experience is necessary as you’ll begin by shadowing reporters in our London newsroom in January 2021 before starting a 17-week NCTJ-approved journalism course with PA Training later that month.

What we can offer you …

You will then return to the PA newsroom in May, where we’ll provide on-the-job training to develop your skills with a diverse programme involving rotations on both our national news and video wires, our picture desk, and with our social and data teams.

You will also be given the support and guidance of senior editors throughout the programme, will be given regular feedback on your work, and will have access to a designated mentor.

We are particularly keen to recruit candidates from a diverse range of ethnic and social backgrounds, and you will be asked how you would bring diversity to our newsrooms.

Successful completion of the 18-month Junior Journalist apprenticeship will be followed by up to a further six months working in PA’s newsrooms while we look to offer you a staff position.
