Advanced Digital Engineering

Arup’s Advanced Digital Engineering group comprises over 300 advanced engineering, digital and project consultants, bringing together a seamless combination of digital and data-related capabilities with Arup’s traditional engineering and design strengths. We use this to solve our clients most complex challenges and help them respond effectively to the fast-changing digital world.

We support Arup’s longstanding commitment to work on the most interesting and innovative projects by using the right modelling, data, technology and automation capabilities to redefine the built environment with our clients. We provide digital advisory services that focus on working with clients on the design of new digital services.

Working in our Web Software team, you will gain exposure to a wide range of projects. A few examples are:

  • Helping to develop digital services that help City Mayors deal with complex planning challenges in their cities.
  • Working with structural engineers and designers to build web tools that help them design renewable energy solutions.
  • Working with our environmental and transport consultants helping to develop analytics solutions to maximise the benefits and minimise the impacts of new transport schemes.
  • Collaborating with other Arup development teams to solve complex data problems and enhance the offering around data first software development.

Do you have an interest in Digital Design Systems? Are you interested in a career in Digital Design for the Built Environment?

We’re currently looking for a Digital Design Summer Placement to join our Web Software team for 6-8 weeks starting in August 2021

You will have the opportunity to become involved in helping us to develop our Digital Design System.  This will take a large proportion of your time with us.  You will be:

  • Working with our design team to research and understand the needs of users of the design system within Arup.
  • You will have the opportunity to develop the design system components.
  • You will help to build interest, momentum, and adoption of the design system.
  • You will have the opportunity to test the design system on a project.
  • You will gain the experience of launching a new design system within an organization.

Whilst on your placement you will also have the opportunity:

  • to shadow our software developers and designers on other projects
  • you will have the opportunity to contribute to projects, perhaps by conducting research, creating wireframes, or testing products.
  • you will learn more about Arup, its work and its culture.



About you

You will be a good communicator and excited about playing your part in having a positive impact on the firm.

You will be working in a team of consultant designers, developers, user researchers and user interface designers and that collaborate with other parts of the business on projects (building engineers, transport consultants, geotechnical engineers, urban planners, etc.). Digital is a growing part of the Arup business, and we are looking for someone who is enthusiastic about contributing to a software development practice in the built environment.

The following qualifications, experience and skills required for this role are:

  • Working towards an undergraduate or masters level in a digital design related discipline with strong results in all modules (2:1/60% or higher)
  • Either currently studying or graduated in 2020 / 2021
  • A portfolio that demonstrates experience in UX/UI design
  • Working independently on UX/UI design work.
  • A proactive and flexible approach and a good communicator
  • Collaborating and working with Software Engineers.
  • Facilitating workshops or presenting work
  • Technology literate – you should understand the logic behind web technologies.
  • Data literate – understanding data processing concepts and visualisation to create data insights.
