About the Risk Management department

The successful candidate will be working in the Risk department at Jefferies. The Risk Management Department is responsible for independent risk oversight and analysis for the Firm by identifying, assessing, monitoring, and managing risk. The main responsibilities include:

  • Establishing and implementing the risk management framework, policies and controls
  • Establishing and implementing the firmwide risk appetite framework and statements in line with the Firm’s strategic business and financial plans
  • Identifying and assessing financial and non-financial risks including existing risks from business activities, emerging risks from changes in external conditions, and risks from new business strategies, initiatives and products introduced through the New Business Process
  • Measuring current and potential risks using quantitative and qualitative methodologies, and monitoring risks through key risk metrics
  • Establishing limit frameworks, monitoring utilizations of the limits against key risk metrics, and ensuring compliance to the limits
  • Performing independent reviews and challenges of risk-taking and hedging activities including deep dives of risk exposures and vulnerability review

The Risk Management Department is led by the Global Chief Risk Officer and organised primarily along risk type lines as well as the Firm’s organization structure by business and legal entities.

  • Market Risk focuses on the risk of loss due to fluctuations in the market value of positions attributable to changes in market variables
  • Credit Risk focuses on the risk of loss due to adverse changes in a counterparty’s credit worthiness or its ability to meet its financial obligations in accordance with the terms and conditions of a financial contract
  • Operational Risk focuses on the risk of financial or non-financial impact resulting from inadequate or failed internal processes, people, systems and use of third parties or from external events
  • Quantitative Risk focuses on the methodologies and models used by the Firm to assess and measure risk
  • Enterprise Risk reviews overarching governance, management frameworks and portfolio risk analysis
  • Office of COO drives the enhancement of risk processes, projects, technology, and resourcing to optimize the efficient delivery of the department’s strategic objectives, Additionally, it focuses on independent reviews and validations of all models used for valuation of the Firm’s inventory.

The role will be a flexible programme that balances extended stays in some of the Risk teams with ad hoc project work across other risk teams. This allows the placement interns to experience and develop their skill set across a wide range of areas.

What we look for in a candidate:

  • Graduating in 2026 with a placement year from June 2024 to June 2025
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Ability to work under pressure and in an organised manner to meet deadlines
  • Problem-solving and decision-making abilities
  • Self-motivated
  • Basic understanding of financial markets
  • Manipulation of data in Excel or practical coding experience
