Questions

Why Hanbury? (200 words)

  • Earlier this year the Prime Minister outlined his five key priorities. Which of these will have the greatest influence on the next General Election and why? (300 words)
  • Last year’s FIFA Men’s World Cup was hosted in Qatar. The gulf state’s record on human rights, including the treatment of LGBT citizens and workers involved in the building of stadiums, was denounced by advocacy groups, and several teams and players protested during the tournament. In the years prior, David Beckham inked a deal to be an ambassador for the host nation. In the run up to and during last year’s world cup, Beckham’s association with Qatar came under intense scrutiny in the UK, particularly in light of his previously outspoken support for the LGBT community. This included a campaign by the comedian Joe Lycett to encourage Beckham to end his association with Qatar. For several months, Beckham’s team did not respond to the campaign, and released a short statement on Lycett’s show only after a stunt in which he appeared to shred £10,000.What do you think of the communications approach taken by Beckham and his PR team? Was this the right approach or should they have responded differently, and if so, how? For example, should Beckham have given a public interview or statement, responded earlier, or not responded at all? When answering, think about what they (should have) said, as well as where and how they say it. (500 words)
