Your role at a glance

Are you looking for a summer internship in a business which is making a real difference to society and accelerating the transition to net zero? One that is technically challenging? One that develops commercial acumen alongside your technical skills?

We’re looking for penultimate year students who want to learn about the role businesses can play in improving society and accelerating the transition to net zero. In this internship, you’ll develop your understanding of how financial services firms interact with the societies and environments where they work, while building your knowledge of carbon reduction, sustainability reporting, social investment and charity partnerships.

What you’ll be doing

The Sustainability agenda is increasingly important to financial services companies. At Legal & General, we have a record of investing in communities and environmental solutions to ensure the long-term economic health of society. Our specialist Sustainability teams exist to push and develop this agenda – advising the business, developing new approaches, implementing programmes and measuring and reporting on our successes. We do this across the areas of social investment, environmental management and monitoring corporate governance.

You will be assigned to one of our central Sustainability teams to work with over the course of the 8-week internship. You will also take part in an induction week designed to introduce you to L&G, help prepare you for the remainder of the internship and build an internal network. Over the course of the internship, you will have the chance to interact with different teams, hear from senior speakers and network with your fellow interns. Some of the day-to-day activities could include:

Group Sustainability Team

  • Support the team’s charity partnerships, by being involved with partnership meetings, project development and other work
  • Conduct desk-based research into charities, preparing or reviewing proposals from charities
  • Review employee applications for fundraise matching; support the team by administering payments and managing budget
  • Develop communication skills by supporting on the review of our corporate website’s Sustainability pages
  • Research and write promotional communications – press releases and internal intranet articles
  • Conduct desk-based research and help prepare for our social and environmental rating reports

Group Environment Team / Group Climate Risk Team

  • Support the team’s management of climate risks across the group, by being involved in collating and benchmarking key climate scenarios.
  • Support with environmental reporting e.g. CDP. This includes data gathering and analysis, working with stakeholders from across the business.
  • Supporting the environmental team with identifying opportunities to reducing the business’ operational carbon emissions.

Group Diversity & Inclusion Team

  • Support the work of the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) team focusing on building practical, useful interventions for leaders, line managers and their people to engage with and learn about DEI
  • Help engage our employees globally on key DEI issues that happen in Q3 and Q4 2023.
  • Undertake desk-based research into DEI issues, industry and societal trends
  • Help engage our most senior leaders in DEI governance forums, management teams and networks

But most importantly you will be learning new skills and gaining knowledge of how our business works!

What we’re looking for

First and foremost, we’re looking for people with an inquisitive mind and a desire to learn. We’re not expecting prior industry experience, but we’ll want to see that you have the tools to develop quickly. These include:

  • Currently an undergraduate, in your penultimate or final year of study
  • We don’t mind what your academic background is: we are open to all degree and A level subjects
